Geography

Geography at Yanwath 🌍🗺️

At Yanwath, our Geography curriculum helps children explore the world around them from an early age – starting even in our Nursery! We encourage curiosity and ask questions about our local area, the UK, and other places around the globe.

Children learn to make connections between what they observe and how maps are used to understand the land. They develop skills in reading simple directions, locating features on maps and atlases, and understanding how places and environments are connected.

Geography is taught in blocks each half term, alternating with History, so children get a rich balance of skills and knowledge throughout the year.

We also bring learning to life through fieldwork and trips, for example:

  • 🏖 Visiting the local beach to practice reading maps

  • ⚓ Exploring local places like the harbour to make geographical observations

  • 🏙 Residential trips outside our county, such as Manchester or London, to discover new environments

Through Geography, children develop a love of exploring the world, understanding different places, and thinking about how people and environments interact.
