Welcome to Year 1

My name is Mr Crouch and I’m the class teacher. We are supported by our teaching assistant Mrs Steele. I have worked at Yanwath Primary School since 2017. I am a mental health and wellbeing advocate who loves dabbling in the performing arts. I enjoy leading choir and planning and creating whole school performances.

In Year 1 we have two parts to our classroom, the formal learning area where we have our seats and do book work and we also have our provision areas where Mr Crouch sets challenges and activities for us to complete. These activities focus on developing skills such as our fine motor, as well as being linked to the curriculum.

Autumn Term

In science this half term we will be learning about materials. This will involve naming a variety of materials and their properties such as if they are soft, stretchy etc. We will also be putting our science knowledge into action – conducting scientific investigations.

Our PE days are Wednesdays and Fridays. Children will need full PE kit for these days and their PE kit will be kept on their peg and taken home to wash each half term. This term our focus is dance and fundamentals.

How to help your child at home

Children are expected to read every night at home in order to progress up the reading stars – strive for 5. In order for the children to really focus on their reading this half term, spellings will be taught and covered in class, however starting in autumn term 2, children will receive spellings on a Friday, to practise all week and be tested the following Friday. These spellings will be linked to their phonics sound or will be from the year 1 high frequency words/common exception words lists.

At the end of year 1 – we have a phonics screening check. This is to check the children have reached the expected level in phonics. With this being a big focus this year, it would be most useful to help children at home with phonics. The best way to do this is to read with your child every night. There are also lots of phonics games online that can support this.
