Art and Design

🎨Art and Design at Yanwath Primary School🎨

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” – Pablo Picasso

Welcome to our Art and Design curriculum page! At Yanwath Primary School, Art and Design is seen as an essential part of a child’s development. We provide a wide range of creative experiences which give our children the opportunity to express their individuality, ideas and understanding within our broad and balanced curriculum.  We strive to use our high-quality curriculum to inspire, engage and challenge children whilst allowing them to experiment and invent their own works of art, craft and design. We want our children to become critical thinkers and to develop a rigorous understanding of art and design. Our aim is for children to master a wide range of techniques when using different materials. As they progress, we will also provide pupils with the opportunity to critically evaluate and analyse artwork, form opinions and encourage them to use artistic language in discussions.

🖌️ Our Curriculum Approach

We follow the KAPOW Primary Art and Design Scheme and this allows for a rich, ambitious and progressive curriculum.

The scheme ensures:

  • A clear progression of skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and craft.

  • Opportunities to explore artists, designers, and makers.

  • Cross-curricular links that deepen understanding and engagement.

  • Creativity and personal expression.

  • Children access a practical and exploratory curriculum.

Children learn to:

  • Use artistic techniques and materials.

  • Develop visual literacy and critical thinking.

  • Reflect on their own and others’ work.
