Early Years

Welcome to Yanwath Primary School Nursery and Early Years unit!

We have had a busy start to the school year, with our first half term focusing on the topic ‘All About Me’. We learnt about the parts of our bodies, we painted wonderful self-portraits and we learnt lots about each other and our families.

We are now moving in to an exciting half term where we are going to be learning all about Julia Donaldson and CHRISTMAS! We are going to focus on different Julia Donaldson books over the weeks and will have lots of exciting activities linked with these. We also learn phonics, literacy and maths every day. As of Autumn 2, we have started introducing a new phonics sound each week and we have already looked at the ‘s’ and the ‘a’ sounds.

Here at Yanwath Nursery, we follow a child-led approach and the children are very much in charge of their learning. As a staff, we have particular objectives to cover each week but we do this through fun and engaging activities that the children may lead. For example, one of our children came in one morning and began making a pirate boat. This led on to the children creating pirate hats, hooks and eye patches, reading different pirate themed books and linking their literacy and maths with this.

Before you go, we want you to see one of our favourite parts of the Early Years unit…OUR GARDEN! The staff worked hard over the summer of 2021 to create a vibrant and engaging outdoor area for the children to enjoy. As a school, we value the importance of the outdoors and its effect on our mental health. Therefore, we give the children access to the outdoor space as much as possible and they love getting to experiment in the mud kitchen or be creative in the role play areas.
